Capleton Lights Up Sound Academy Easter Thursday in T.O.

The show was called “Legends”, and Easter Thursday in Toronto was highlighted by none other than the “Fireman” himself, ‘legendary’ artist Capleton (St. Mary, Jamaica) bunnin’ a sweet fire inside Toronto’s Sound Academy Nightclub.  Just under 1,000 Capleton fans, despite having to wait for a late 2am showtime, would not be let down, as Capleton, backed by the Prophecy Band, put on yet another excellent performance from start to finish, steadily pacing through hit after hit to the crowd’s delight.

Big up Spex, Black Reaction, Eyesus and Father Price as well, a Canadian contingent who worked extra hard to keep the audience entertained until the “Legends” concert delayed start time. Interestingly, despite paying up to $70 (door price, $45/$55 advance) and despite one of the two headline artists promised not being delivered, the vibe was allright inside Sound Academy and fans were more or less patient.

But when it appeared time for Louie Culture to perform, the MC, Delroy G. (G98.7 FM) was slick in quickly announcing, “Loui Culture’s note here”, before proceeding to introduce Capleton’s Prophecy Band to the stage. If audience members had paid to see Louie Culture and Capleton, it was now clear that there would only be only one ‘legend’ taking the stage on this night, and there would be no explanation by promoters as to why, and no time for crowds to protest.  Capleton, with his Prophecy Band, would take the stage and would not leave until the lights were turned on about 90 minutes later.

Big up Capleton – another good Toronto show.  I’ve seen Capleton in Canada many times over the years, and the “Fireman”, a little bit older now, hasn’t lost a step.  Dressed in a gold from head to toe, Capleton (without Jah Thunder) is still in great physical condition and proved it, never slowing down, and lyrically never short of breath, offbeat or off time when it came to spitting out classic lyrics from his incredible string of  hits delivered over  his career.  I give Capleton full props for being one of the most consistent Jamaican artists who generally comes to Toronto to perform every two years. Big up yu’self Capleton, you come’a Toronto an bun down di place cause afterall, a nuh you a di’real ‘fireman’!

And just a footnote…a few days prior to Legends @ Sound Academy, Louie Culute issued a video statement via Facebook regarding him not coming to Toronto for Legends, stating in part that he had been trying desperately to contact the show’s Toronto promoters who to this day has never called him back. Here is a clip of the video.  We contacted promoters Glamorous Movements for a statement in response to this video, but so far, there has been response (when there is one, we will update this paragraph).
